Mr. Purdie. A collection of old ballads in manuscript has
lately fallen into my hands, among the rest a fragment of
one, which (with a few alterations) may serve for an
epithalamium on any similar occasion. As there have been
few arrivals of late from Britain, and of consequence a
scarcity of news, I desire the favour of you to publish it
as soon as it comes to hand; and am, sir, your constant
reader, and humble servant.
How comes it, neighbour Dick,
That you, with youth uncommon,
Have serv'd the girls a trick,
And marry'd an old woman?
. . . [11 verses, burdened with] Happy Dick!
